- Hardening newly deployed appliances — selecting the appliance-hardening techniques that give the most secure result for a described environment.
Notice what those have in common: you're not typing configuration from memory, you're investigating and deciding. The exam rewards the architect's diagnostic habit — narrow the fault domain, reason from evidence, choose the remediation that fits.

The multiple-choice questions are design questions
Don't picture recall items. CNX-001's multiple-choice questions are typically requirement-driven: given these business, technical, and regulatory constraints, which design fits? Several options will be technically workable — the exam wants the one that best satisfies the stated requirements.
That means reading precisely matters enormously. The constraint that decides the answer is often a single clause about latency, compliance, cost, or availability. Identify what's actually being asked before evaluating options.
Pacing strategy for test day
165 minutes sounds generous. Two things consume it: PBQs, and the fact that every multiple-choice question requires real thought.
- Triage the PBQs. Do the tractable ones; flag deep time-sinks and return rather than burning fifteen minutes early.
- Read the scenario constraints carefully on multiple-choice items — that's where the answer is decided.
- Return to flagged items with your remaining time.
- Leave nothing blank. There's no penalty for a wrong answer.
Build timed practice in from the middle of your preparation, not the last week. Stamina matters over a 165-minute sitting.
Retake rules
If you don't pass, standard CompTIA retake spacing applies — you can retake after a failure, with a wait period from the third attempt onward, and each attempt requires its own voucher.
