A Study Plan for CompTIA Server+ (SK0-005)
Server+ candidates are usually working IT professionals, not students with open calendars — so this plan is built to cover the objectives efficiently, weight your effort by domain, and build the hands-on fluency the performance-based questions demand. It's framed as a six-to-eight-week structure you can compress or stretch to fit your schedule and experience.
Because CompTIA recommends about two years of server experience for Server+, much of this may be review — but the exam is specific, so a structured pass over the objectives (and honest lab practice on weak areas) is what turns experience into a first-attempt pass.

The principle behind the schedule
Study time should follow exam weight. Server Administration (30%) and Troubleshooting (28%) are the two biggest domains, so they get the most attention. And because Server+ is hands-on and PBQ-heavy, lab time runs through the whole plan — reading alone won't carry you.
Set up a lab
Before you start, arrange hands-on practice. You don't need a rack of servers — a virtualization host (a spare machine or your workstation running a hypervisor) lets you deploy server OSes, configure storage and RAID in software, set up services like DNS and DHCP, and practice backup and recovery. Real hardware helps for the physical domain, but a virtual lab covers most of the exam.
Week 1 — Server Hardware Installation and Management (18%)
Start with the physical foundation: installing hardware, racking and cabling, chassis and unit sizes, power and cooling, server components, and storage including RAID levels. If you have access to real hardware, use it; otherwise, study configurations and practice RAID concepts in software.
Weeks 2–3 — Server Administration (30%)
The biggest domain gets two weeks. Week 2: server OS installation and administration, and storage and virtualization management. Week 3: network configuration and services on servers, basic scripting for automation, and high availability concepts. Do this in your lab — deploy an OS, stand up a service, configure virtualization. This is where hands-on practice pays off most.
Week 4 — Security and Disaster Recovery (24%)
Physical and logical security controls, server hardening, access controls, and data security; then backup methods and rotation schemes, replication, and recovery planning (RTO, RPO, and strategy trade-offs). Configure a backup and practice a restore in your lab rather than just reading about it.
Weeks 5–6 — Troubleshooting (28%) and review
The second-biggest domain, and it draws on everything above. Practice methodical diagnosis of hardware, software, storage, security, and networking problems on servers. Then shift into readiness mode: take full-length, timed practice exams, review every miss, and drill weak domains. When you're consistently clearing your target, book the exam.
A readiness benchmark
Because the passing score is scaled (750 on 100–900), don't chase a raw percentage. Aim to consistently score around 85% or higher on realistic, full-length practice tests before you book — that gives you a comfortable margin.

Is six to eight weeks enough for Server+? For candidates with server experience studying consistently, often yes. Those newer to servers may want more time and extra lab work.
