A Beginner's Study Plan for CompTIA Tech+ (FC0-U71)
If this is your first IT certification, the hardest part is often just knowing where to start. This plan removes that guesswork. It's a six-week structure built for total beginners, weighted by how much of the exam each domain represents, with a little hands-on practice and full-length practice tests built in so you walk into exam day confident.
Six weeks is a comfortable pace at a few hours a week. If you're moving quickly or have some background, you can compress it; if life is busy, stretch it. The sequence matters more than the calendar.

The principle behind the schedule
Study time should follow exam weight. Infrastructure (24%) and Security (19%) are the two biggest domains, so they get the most attention. Everything else is important but lighter. And because Tech+ is a "what is it, why use it" exam rather than a hands-on one, understanding concepts clearly beats memorizing trivia.
Week 1 — IT Concepts and Terminology
Start with the vocabulary that everything builds on: the input-processing-output-storage model, notational systems (binary and hexadecimal), units of measure, and the troubleshooting methodology. Spend a little extra time getting comfortable converting between binary, hex, and decimal — it pays off in later domains and it's a common early stumbling block.
This is a lighter week, which makes it a good time to set up your study routine and get familiar with your chosen materials.
Weeks 2–3 — Infrastructure
The biggest domain gets two weeks. Week 2: common computing devices, internal components (CPU, RAM, motherboard), storage types, and peripherals. Week 3: networking basics, input/output interfaces, and cloud models.
This is where a little hands-on practice helps most. Connecting a device, exploring what's inside a computer, or looking at how your home network is set up turns abstract terms into things you actually understand.
Week 4 — Applications and Software
Operating systems and their components, software types and their proper use, configuring web browser features, and the common uses of artificial intelligence. Keep it conceptual: you're learning what each thing is for, not how to administer it. The AI content is newer, so give it a careful read.
Week 5 — Software Development and Database Fundamentals
Two lighter domains together this week. For Software Development: programming language categories, data types, and basic logic — no coding required, just recognizing the ideas. For Databases: what data is worth, what a database is for, and how databases are structured. The aim is literacy, so don't overthink either one.
Week 6 — Security, review, and practice tests
Security is 19%, so give it real attention: the CIA triad, securing devices, password best practices, encryption uses, small wireless network security, and recognizing threats like phishing and malware.
Then shift into readiness mode. Take full-length, timed practice tests. Review every question you miss and every one you guessed correctly. Drill your weak domains. Rehearse the 60-minute pacing so exam day feels familiar. When you're consistently clearing your target with time to spare, you're ready to book.
