In the first post of this series we covered Learn: which CompTIA and EC-Council certifications to take, and in what order. This post is about the step most people underinvest in: Practice.
Reading about a port scan is not the same as running one. Memorizing a firewall rule is not the same as writing one that works. Hands-on practice is where concepts turn into skills, and where exam questions stop feeling abstract.
Why labs matter for certification
- Performance-based questions. CompTIA exams such as Security+ include simulations where you have to configure or investigate something, not just pick an answer. Candidates who have never touched a tool tend to lose time on these.
- Scenario questions. Even multiple-choice questions on CEH or CySA+ are written around real situations. If you have done the task, the right answer is easier to spot.
- Retention. You remember what you did far longer than what you read.
- Job readiness. Employers care about the certification, but they care more about whether you can do the work.
How the CertInstructor lab system is organized
We think of labs in three layers. You can use one, or combine all three.
Layer 1: Official CompTIA CertMaster Labs
CertMaster Labs are CompTIA's official hands-on lab environments, aligned to the exam objectives. You work in a hosted environment through your browser, so there is nothing to build or install on your own computer. They suit learners who want guided practice mapped directly to the exam.
CertInstructor offers CertMaster Labs for many certifications, including:
- Tech+ (FC0-U71)
- Security+ (SY0-701)
- CySA+ (CS0-004)
- PenTest+ (PT0-003)
- SecurityX (CAS-005)
- Linux+ (XK0-006)
See the full list in the CompTIA CertMaster Labs collection.
Layer 2: Official EC-Council iLabs for CEH v13
For ethical hacking, the best practice is attacking a real (and safe) target environment. The CEH v13 AI Hands-On Labs give you EC-Council's official iLabs with lab guide videos that walk you through the exercises, covering the 20 modules of the CEH curriculum. It is a good fit if you are preparing for CEH or want practical experience before attempting CEH Practical.

Layer 3: Free browser-based practice you can try today
Not ready to buy anything yet? We build free labs ourselves, so you can try hands-on practice at no cost:
- Pentest Range. A browser-based, simulation-only cyber range, so there is nothing to install and no virtual machines to run. It models a single network with an attacker machine (Kali) and three vulnerable targets (a Linux host, a Windows and Active Directory host, and a web application), plus a Blue Team capstone. It includes around 40 labs mapped to the Cyber Kill Chain and MITRE ATT&CK, with a simulated terminal, auto-graded missions and quizzes. Your progress is saved in your own browser. Open the Pentest Range
- Free TCPDump Cyber Lab. Practice network traffic analysis, a skill that matters in IT, ICS/SCADA and IoT security. Read the lab guide
A note on honesty: simulations are great for learning workflows and building confidence, but they do not replace a live lab. That is why we recommend the official labs in Layers 1 and 2 when you are preparing for a hands-on exam.
A simple weekly practice routine
- Study a topic for an hour with your course or study plan.
- Do the matching lab the same week, while the concept is fresh.
- Write down what broke. Failed commands and misconfigurations teach more than successful ones.
- Redo the lab without the guide a few days later.
- Add practice questions on the same topic to check you can explain what you just did.
Which labs for which goal?
| Your goal | Start with |
|---|---|
| First certification, new to IT | Tech+ labs, then A+ |
| Security fundamentals | Security+ labs + the free Pentest Range |
| SOC and blue team | CySA+ labs + the TCPDump lab |
| Ethical hacking | CEH v13 iLabs + PenTest+ labs |
| Linux skills | Linux+ labs |
Ready to start? Browse all labs and courses, or try the free Pentest Range first and see whether hands-on practice is your style.
